Beard Under Chin
Beard under chin is a fairly common discomfort in women. It’s considered to be harmless. Although, as the saying goes, “bearded woman, always liked”, none of us like that chin hair, also referred to as hirsutism.
There may be no reason to worry, but there may be some cases in which new friends have an inkling of hormonal disorders.
In this article we have included the 7 potential causes and the possible methods how to eliminate them.
The causes of hair under the chin
Genetic inheritance
Along with dark circles, temper, and acne, chin hair can also be hereditary. So, if your grandmother had them, and so did your mom, it might be you too.
Like many things in this life, hair under the chin can be a genetic trait. If you’ve noticed hair in this spot on your grandmother or mother, you may notice the same thing on your chin at the same age.
The hormonal factors
With the arrival of menstrual cycle, we begin to form a relationship of hate and love even with our hormones. Even hormonal imbalances can, among other things, lead to some hair on the chin.
Other women, on the other hand, produce more androgynous hormones than others, which can cause hair under the chin. Nothing to be scared of, but we must always monitor the functioning of our beloved hormones.
A question of age
For some it all begins with menopause. There are women, or rather girls, whose hair under the chin appears at a younger age, with the onset of sexual maturity.
In that case, the problem could be connected, in fact, to hormonal changes. For other women, however, hair under the chin appears during pregnancy.
The balance of hormones in our bodies changes throughout our life. At the age of menopause, women begin to produce less estrogen.
If hair growth in this area of the face started at this stage in your life, it has to do with the big changes your body is going through.
You may see them stabilize over time, or you may find that you need to do a little more waxing to keep the skin smooth.
Polycystic ovary syndrome and hair under the chin
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs) usually occurs in adolescence with menstrual disorders, hirsutism and headaches, acne, and other problems of various kinds. Hirsutism is another side effect, so women with PCOS may have more hair on their chin and jaw.
It would be necessary to consult a doctor, not so much for the hairiness issue as to limit and contain the damage and discomfort of a polycystic ovary.
Symptoms include irregular periods, difficulty losing weight, infertility, and sometimes ovarian cysts. PCOS is generally characterized by ovarian cysts, which interfere with what is considered normal levels of estrogen production.
Cushing’s syndrome
According to the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation, excess hair on the chin can sometimes be linked to a condition called Cushing’s syndrome.
Cushing’s syndrome is characterized by a high concentration of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, which can also be linked to stretch marks, weight gain, and even type diabetes-2.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
Some chin hair is caused by congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a condition typically diagnosed at birth.
Either your adrenal glands are producing too much on their own, or their production is being accelerated by certain arthritis or asthma medications.
These people lack an essential enzyme that secretes hormones from the adrenal glands. As a result, the body produces more male hormones, which trigger the growth of chin hair.
Pregnancy or birth control
One of the biggest hormonal changes a woman’s body can undergo is pregnancy.
Unusual or excessive growth of chin hair is nothing to be alarmed about for a pregnant woman.
Likewise, women who use birth control contraceptives may experience unusual hair growth due to the change their body is undergoing.
These hormonal changes are usually temporary, and those that appear on the extra chin disappear as your body chemistry balances.
How to remove hair under the chin
In general, it is enough to shave. Razor, wax, tweezers, or pulsed light. But it is always better to consult your doctor first to rule out any kind of hormonal imbalance and choose the most suitable solution.
There are also natural remedies to eliminate hair, including cotton or silk thread, thanks to which the hairs are extirpated at the root, slowing down their regrowth; or the turmeric mask, which gradually weakens the hair and lightens it.
Just mix water and turmeric until you reach a creamy paste, spread it on your face, and let it act for about 20 minutes before rinsing.
Not just an aesthetic problem
Hair under the chin can be annoying from an aesthetic point of view. War is often waged against it by resorting to more traditional methods, such as:
- razor
- waxing
- tweezers
- depilatory cream
In some cases, however, laser hair removal is preferred to send them away permanently.
When to worry about hair under the chin?
In particular, the presence of hair in that part of the body could indicate some hormonal imbalance. A problem that occurs mainly during puberty.
It is not excluded, however, that hormonal imbalances may also occur in adulthood. For this reason, the problem should be evaluated together with your doctor.
Also not to be underestimated is heredity which does not necessarily mean that you have health problems.
An excess of cortisol or an excess of male hormones in the circulation could give birth to the many hated hairs.
Another cause is represented by the birth control pill, indicated in the leaflet as a side effect. If hairs appear, it would be advisable to evaluate the dosage or the change pill.
In severe cases, hair could be a symptom of a polycystic ovary. In addition to hair, there may be weight gain, irregular periods, and difficulty conceiving.
